Girls at the grassroots were not left out, as the world marks the 2019 International Day of the Girl child.
Girls in the public and private secondary schools in Eruwa, the Ibarapa East Local Government of Oyo State gathered at the Eruwa town hall to observe the day.
Speaking at the occasion, the Public Relations Officer, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, Mrs. Opeyemi Olawore commended the organizer of the programme, Miss Ebun Abolanle, the convener, Flawless Female Network for her initiative and for domesticating the programme at the grassroots level.
Mrs Olawore while speaking on the theme for this year’s celebration, ‘Empowering the Girl child for a brighter tomorrow,’ examined the various challenges confronting the girl child to include: illiteracy, discrimination, rape, child labour, poor nutrition and a host of others.
She advised every girl to take their education seriously, while stressing that their education is their inheritance. She maintained that education, vocational training and entrepreneurship are key to a brighter future.
She also described education as the first means of empowering the girl child for a brighter tomorrow.
According to her, ‘ education is not the end but a means to an end.
Education today has gone beyond having certificate but it is a summation of knowledge, vocational skill and entrepreneurship study.’
She then challenged the girl to rise and say yes to godliness, excellence, contentment, discipline and humility”.
Mrs Olawore commended the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde for his effort at providing free education for students in the public primary and secondary school level.
She appealed to the government at all levels to take concrete steps at reducing out of school children.
In his words, the EYM President, Mr. Bimbo Olaniyan hinted that there is no feat that the girl child cannot attain.
He posited that every girl child has the full right as their male counterpart.
He therefore, implored the girls to be courageous and also utilize their God given potentials positively.
In her address, Miss Ebun Abolanle, the convener, Flawless Female Network listed the names of outstanding females in Africa and Nigeria, as examples and sure evidences that the upcoming girls of today could become reference points in the future.
She advised the girls to stay focused and pursue their vision.
In their responses, the participating girls promised to take their education more seriously, as they solicited for the full support of their parents in order to attain greater heights in the future.
Present at the events were students from; Akolu Grammar School, Muslim High School, Ifelodun Private School, Victory Model College, Ebenezer Baptist College and Treasure College, all in Eruwa.
The annual international day of the girl child is observed every 11th October.
