Bauchi – Following the delay in announcing the winner of the Bauchi State governorship election result by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a coalition of youth groups in the state has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yakubu Mahmood, INEC chairman, to immediately announce the winner of the election to advert crisis in the state.
Addressing press conference yesterday at the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat on behalf of the groups, the chairperson of Bauchi State Concerned Citizens Mrs. Rhoda Jibrin, said that since the election was conducted peacefully, free and fair as affirmed by the returning officer, Mrs. Dominion Anosike, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bala Mohammed Kaura, should be declared the winner.
”As patriots, we view these happenings as callous, unwarranted and uncalled for. For too long we have been kicked around by the opportunist politicians, who think that, the only way they can continue to oil their wheels of self-aggrandizement is to take advantage of their position of power to dictate the will and the mandate of the people by using power to rob the good people of Bauchi State of their constitutional mandate, which has been obtained through the legitimate process.
“The Commissioner of Police and the police officer in charge of Rapid Response team, Baba Yola, have personally and openly masterminded the physical assault of the good people of the state, who come out en masse to exercise their constitutional right by voting the leaders of their choice. Therefore, we have lost confidence in their ability to treat both the opposition parties in the state with civility, respect and, therefore, lost absolute confidence in their capacity to treat people equally as it enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said
The chairperson called on the citizens of Bauchi State to mobilise and commence peaceful demonstrations starting from 20th March 2919 to register their protest and demand the immediate redeployment of the Police Commissioner in Bauchi and Yola for being partisan during and after the election.
She further demanded that the state returning officer should tender an apology letter to the good people of the state for making them uncomfortable with her declaration of the result inconclusive while call on INEC to declare the winner of the election without further delay
