Nine people were injured after an explosion aboard an oil tanker docked in the South Korean port of Ulsan that resulted in a fire which spread to another tanker on Saturday.
The explosion reportedly occurred on the 25,000 tonne Cayman Island-registered, Stolt Greenland, before spreading to another nearby tanker. The 25 man crew of the Stolt Greenland and 21 sailors from the other vessel were successfully rescued by the emergency services, with the nine sailors who were injured reportedly coming from the Stolt.
According to local South Korean news agency Yonhap the Stolt’s 25 man crew included both Philippines and Russian nationals. The Vice-Consul of the Russian Federation in Busan Evgeny Evdokimov stated the Russian consulate was attempting to find out more about the condition of the ten of its nationals that were on board, but none are thought to be seriously injured. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion.
