Tribunal Upholds T. A. Orji’s Election

UMUAHIA –The National and State House Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia on Tuesday upheld the election of Chief Theodore Orji of the PDP as Senator for Abia Central Senatorial District.

In an unanimous judgment by the three-man tribunal delivered in Umuahia, its chairman, Justice Adeyinka Adebirigbe, dismissed the petition by Mrs Nkechi Nwaogu against Orji for her (petitioner’s) failure to prove her allegations.

Nwaogu, the APC candidate for the district and onetime Senator representing the district, had approached the tribunal to challenge the declaration of Orji as duly elected senator for district by INEC, saying that his declaration contravened the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Nwaogu had alleged irregularities in 215 polling units of the National Assembly election that returned Orji and asked the tribunal to order for a rerun.

However, the tribunal in its judgment held that the petitioner failed to adduce substantial evidence to prove her allegations, pointing out that the petitioner only called one polling unit agent as witness out of the 215 polling units, which, according to the judges, was not enough to prove her case.
